In the early 1990s, Pastor Rudy Rasmus and his wife, Juanita, started by feeding the hungry on the streets of downtown Houston. As they looked into the faces of those in line, they saw their own mothers, fathers, and sisters—people whose circumstances could change at any moment. This realization, that the "tables can turn" for anyone, transformed a charitable act into a lifelong calling to close the gap for those the system had forgotten, especially foster youth aging out into a world without a safety net.
The defining moment for Bread of Life, Inc. came when they expanded from immediate relief to long-term stability. Recognizing that independence requires a foundation, they pioneered holistic housing like the upcoming Knowles Rowland House. By providing 31 new residents with mental health support, life skills, and a front door of their own, Pastor Rudy is proving that the transition from the system to the community doesn't have to be a freefall. It can be a homecoming.
